Girls Trip is perhaps the biggest surprise of the year, and by far the most memorable film I’ve seen this summer. In the R-Rated raunch-fest, four life-long friends (Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish-in a breakout role) head over to the New Orleans’ Essence Festival for a weekend of debauchery as hilarity ensues. This cliche premise has been done before (the comparisons to Sony Pictures’ Rough Night are almost inherent) and the trailers didn’t promise much. Imagine my surprise when I say that this is without a doubt the funniest film I’ve seen all year. Girls Trip goes where most studio-comedies wouldn’t dare, it pushes boundaries and succeeds on every level largely thanks to genuine, honest characters and hilarious performances, most notably Tiffany Haddish who is to this film what Melissa McCarthy was to Bridesmaids. The 2-hour run-time flew by quickly, and for once, I really didn’t want a movie to end. Hopefully, this will be the sleeper hit that saves the summer, and claims the title of being "the next Hangover”.
